Let’s quantify that. UNICEF India states that “India has witnessed a steady decline in maternal mortality ratio from 130 per 100,000 live births during 2014–16 to 97 per 100,000 live births during 2018–20.” Their latest data from 2023 tells us MMR in India is now at 88 maternal deaths per 100,000 live births. That’s progress. But it’s also a statistic that shows pregnancy in India is and continues to be a significant health event that requires support, knowledge, and care.

- Attend childbirth education classes. Understanding labor, breathing techniques, and newborn care before birth makes a real difference. Research shows women who attend childbirth education classes report lower fear of labor and better birth experiences.
- Do not skip postnatal care. A 2025 study in Scientific Reports found that complete continuum-of-care utilization meaning antenatal, delivery, and postnatal care together was only around 50% in India as of NFHS. That number needs to be higher. Postnatal care protects your recovery and your baby’s health.
- Talk about your fears. Whether it is to your doctor, your partner, a support group, or a trained childbirth educator keeping pregnancy anxieties bottled up does not help you or your baby.
